A day in the sandstone, with the driving done for you

Two hours north of Prague, the Elbe has cut a canyon through sandstone, and the forest above is full of rock towers, gorges and arches. The largest, the Pravčická Gate, is the emblem of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park.

This ride is built around a walk: about 90 minutes uphill and back on a forest path. Nine hours door to door leave around five in the park, with time at the top, lunch in Hřensko and the river road home. Not suited to anyone who would rather not walk uphill.

    Pravčická Gate

    Europe's largest natural sandstone arch, high in the forest above Hřensko. Your driver drops you at the Tři prameny trailhead; from there it's about 2 km uphill on a forest path, 30 to 45 minutes each way. A fee is charged at the top.

    Hřensko Village

    The village where the Kamenice gorge meets the Elbe: timbered houses squeezed between sandstone walls, at the lowest point in the Czech Republic. The natural place for a late lunch after the walk.

    Elbe Canyon

    Between Děčín and Hřensko the road follows the Elbe through a deep sandstone canyon, cliffs on both sides. Seen from the car, with a riverside pause where it's practical to stop.

Useful tips

  • 01Bring walking shoes, water and a warm layer: it is cooler and windier at the arch than in the valley.
  • 02Since the 2022 forest fire some paths remain closed, including the Gabriela Trail. The way up is from Tři prameny. Check the park's notices shortly before your date.

Questions

Is the driver a guide?

No. Your driver is local and knows the route, but is not a licensed guide and does not guide inside museums or monuments.

Can we choose the stops?

Yes. The stops are suggestions. Agree with your driver at pickup which ones you want time at; the day has to fit the booked hours and traffic.

Are entrance tickets and meals included?

No. Sights are ticketed separately and meals are your own. Your driver waits while you visit or eat.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel at least 24 hours before pickup for a full refund.

Can we finish somewhere other than our hotel?

Yes. The ride can end at any address in the city, such as a restaurant for dinner. Tell us when you book.
