Both banks of the Danube in one day
Budapest is two cities facing each other across the Danube: hilly Buda, with the castle and its old town, and flat Pest, with the Parliament, the boulevards and the cafés. For half a century it shared an empire with Vienna, and it was built to rival it.
The motorway takes about 2 hours 45 minutes each way, which leaves around four and a half hours in Budapest. With a car, both banks and both hills fit into that time; the driver moves you between them and you decide where to stay longer.

Your chosen meeting point
Confirmed before the rideYour driver meets you at your hotel or any address in Vienna. The drive to Budapest takes about 2 hours 45 minutes.

Hungarian Parliament
The neo-Gothic Parliament on the Pest bank, best seen first from across the river. Inside visits run only on its own timed tours, which sell out well ahead.

Chain Bridge
The first permanent bridge between Buda and Pest, opened in 1849 and guarded by stone lions. The driver crosses it on the way to Castle Hill; a few minutes on foot on the Pest side give the classic view.

Castle Hill
Buda's old town on its long hill: the Royal Palace at one end, Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion at the other, and the best view of Pest from the ramparts. Cars need a permit, so the driver waits at the nearest point. Allow at least an hour.

The Citadel on Gellért Hill
The Habsburg fortress on Gellért Hill, with the Liberty Statue in front and the widest view of Budapest: both banks, the bridges and the bend of the river. Reopened in spring 2026 after restoration; the viewpoint is free.

St Stephenâs Basilica
Budapest's largest church, completed in 1905, its dome exactly as high as the Parliament's: 96 metres. Church and dome terrace are ticketed; the square in front is a fine place for a late lunch.
