Hallstatt & the Salzkammergut

  • 12 hours
  • Door to door

Three lakes and the village everyone has seen in a photo

The Salzkammergut is Austria's lake district: dozens of lakes between limestone mountains east of Salzburg, where salt was mined for thousands of years and emperors spent their summers. Hallstatt, a village on a ledge between mountain and lake, is its best-known picture and a UNESCO site.

This is the longest of our days from Vienna. The route goes in by Gmunden and St Gilgen, reaches Hallstatt in the early afternoon and returns directly. About seven and a half hours are on the road; four and a half are yours, most of them in Hallstatt.

    Schloss Ort, Gmunden

    St Gilgen and the Wolfgangsee

A village of painted houses on the Wolfgangsee, where Mozart's mother was born. A lakeside walk and a coffee by the water. If time is short, skip this one so more of the day goes to Hallstatt.

    Hallstatt Market Square
