The staterooms in an hour, then the gardens on your own
Schönbrunn is a whole palace complex, and this tour gives it a clear shape. Your guide meets the group at the Ehrenhof Fountain and leads a skip-the-line route through about twenty staterooms, including the 40-metre Great Gallery and the Hall of Ceremonies.
Along the way the guide covers Habsburg history and the private side of court life, including Empress Elisabeth's rooms and routine. The guided part ends inside the palace; you then have an hour for the gardens, as far as the Gloriette on the hill.
It suits a first visit better than an audio guide: no ticket queue, and two hours instead of an open-ended afternoon.
