The city once the lights are on

After dark the Ring becomes a run of lit façades, the old town empties to a few lamplit lanes, and from the hills at the city's edge you see all of it at once.

You choose the start time. The ride ends back at your hotel, or at a restaurant or concert hall if you prefer. The drive up to the Kahlenberg takes longest, and it is the stop most guests remember.

   Hofburg Palace

   The Hofburg after dark: the dome above Michaelerplatz and the long wing on Heldenplatz lit up, the courtyards almost empty. A short walk through one of the gateways is worth the few minutes.

   Vienna Old Town

   The first district in the evening: the lit cathedral above Stephansplatz, the Graben and the lanes around it. Most of it is car-free, so the driver waits at the edge while you walk in.

   Ringstrasse

   The boulevard that replaced the city walls in the 1860s, and the best single drive in Vienna: Opera, Hofburg, museums, Parliament, City Hall, Burgtheater and University, one after another. Seen slowly from the car.

   Belvedere Palace

   Two Baroque palaces built for Prince Eugene of Savoy, joined by a terraced garden that looks back over the city. The gardens are free to walk; the Klimt galleries in the Upper Belvedere are ticketed.

   Vienna Wheel

   The Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater, turning since 1897 and famous from The Third Man. An exterior stop; a 15-minute ride in a wooden cabin is ticketed and can be added if you ask in advance.

   Kahlenberg

   The hill at the edge of the Vienna Woods, reached by the winding Höhenstrasse. From the terrace the whole city lies below, the Danube running through it and vineyards on the slope: the widest view of Vienna, day or night.
