The world's oldest zoo, in the grounds of Schönbrunn
Founded in 1752 by Emperor Francis I, Tiergarten Schönbrunn is the oldest zoo still on its original site, inside the palace grounds. The enclosures are modern, and it combines easily with the palace or gardens on the same day.
Around 700 species live here, including giant pandas, Siberian tigers, koalas, polar bears, elephants, lions and penguins, along with native Austrian species and conservation programmes.
