The Danube's finest stretch by road, on foot and by water
The Wachau is the vineyard-and-castle stretch of the Danube, and this day shows it from several angles: a guided stop in Krems, a walk through Dürnstein below the castle where Richard the Lionheart was held, and, in season, a river boat through the valley.
Melk Abbey, a Baroque monastery on a bluff above the river, is the centrepiece. It is a guided visit on winter departures and an optional upgrade in summer, when the boat runs.
Choose it for the river landscape and its history together, rather than a single abbey ticket.
